Innovative Remodeling Enhances Independence

Innovative Remodeling Enhances Independence

Glickman Design Build of Rockville, Maryland knows that the most successful remodeling projects are the ones that not only look great, but also add functionality to the homeowners’ daily routine. Even better are designs that work well today while anticipating how members of the household will live in the space in the future – and that’s exactly the knowledge and expertise that sets Glickman apart from the competition. Here’s a look at a few recent solutions they’ve designed and built for clients.

An accessible bathroom

The award-winning bathroom remodel/renovation pictured above was truly unique. The client has ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and needed the bathroom in his 18th floor condo to be accessible. Working on a tight timeline – less than one month while the client was out of town – Glickman completely renovated and reinvented the space. Even with the logistics of demolition, the downtown location, 18th floor access and the limited time, the Glickman craftspeople were able to replace the originally installed tub and cabinets with a roll-in shower space, an accessible sink, beautiful tile work, storage, grab bars, and numerous fine details. The owner was delighted to have a space that was as functional as it was appealing…a complete success for all involved.

A Suite Space for In-laws
Not long ago, a suburban family approached Glickman Design Build with a fairly lengthy to-do list of renovations for their home. With aging parents who visited frequently their number one priority was to create a functional and attractive in-law suite featuring a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchenette, all complete with accessible features. Also on their wish list was to update a powder room, convert a dated laundry room into a better functioning laundry/mudroom and in the kitchen add a breakfast nook, new hood above an existing range, and larger kitchen island. They also wanted to build a new deck in the back yard.

Desired Details
Even with that extensive must-have list, the owners also demanded a number of details to ensure that the home still felt cohesive and inviting. With that in mind, the Glickman Design team delighted the homeowners with a corner niche with glass tile accent, a curb-less shower with linear drain and a filtered cold-water dispenser in the kitchenette.

End Result
The zero step entry addition and in- law suite fit seamlessly with the existing footprint of the home. Careful attention was paid to blend the new spaces and materials perfectly with those throughout the existing space. The homeowners now have ample, accessible living area for their parents’ visits, as well as a breakfast nook, larger island, powder room, laundry room/mudroom area and deck that the whole family can enjoy every day.

An elevator addition that raises a home’s functionality
When other contractors decided that adding a four-floor elevator to this Northern Virginia home was too complicated, the Glickman Design team devised a solution that added functionality, convenience and luxury – at a price point below the customer’s expectations.

Unusual Challenges
The unique project entailed numerous “must-haves” and design/construction considerations:
• The elevator could not intrude into an existing master bedroom, which would have required extensive engineering alterations.
• The structure had to be freestanding and built with steel and wood framing, while the exterior brick and slate roof had to match the existing home.
• Access was required on all 4 floors, plus the attic.
• Due to the proximity of an underground spring, the site location required a complex drainage solution.

The Result
The elevator addition blended seamlessly with the home’s look and traffic patterns. High-end mirrors, brass and an inlaid tile floor made it as luxurious as it is functional –Overall the project truly exceeded all of the owner’s expectations.
