Villages are a place-based, grassroots response to building community capacity to support older adults’ ability to live independently. Villages are nonprofit organizations run by volunteers and staff, supported primarily through member dues. Villages coordinate access to affordable services; provide volunteer services including transportation, health and wellness programs, home repairs, & social and educational activities. Villages support members to age safely and successfully in their communities. Villages reduce seniors’ isolation, and improve their inter-dependence, health, and sense of purpose.
Villages work to ensure seniors have …
RESOURCES: An accessible and senior-focused resource center, which connects seniors to services, activities, and technology support in every community.
ENGAGEMENT: A gathering space to meet for yoga class, discuss key issues with elected officials, use the bathroom while on a walk, share poetry, and find kindred spirits.
EXPECTATIONS: Established community norms in which seniors are active, volunteering, leading activities, and partnering in schools, with small businesses, and with government agencies.
HELP: Trained and committed volunteers to change a lightbulb, do your taxes, provide rides to the doctor, and fix the thingamajig on your smart phone.
