DESCRIPTION: Depression is very common as people age, although not always explored or addressed. Due to multiple medical complications, numerous losses, changes in lifestyle and financial constraints, many emotions arise and symptoms of depression are more prevalent. In addition, our elderly clients are in the stage of Ego Integrity vs. Despair and are experiencing a life review. Therefore, when working with seniors, a clinician may have to address experiences such as childhood traumas, difficult life events and even both death and suicidal ideations. This webinar will focus on depression in the elderly, what this diagnosis can mean for your client and how clinicians can assess and support an individual in the later stages of life.

PRESENTER: Joanna Frankel, associate speaker with Jenerations Health Education, is a graduate of Towson University with bachelor's degrees in psychology and gerontology. She obtained her MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work with a clinical concentration and a focus on aging. She is also the founder of Frankel Care Consulting and onthe faculty at Howard Community College, teaching Aging and Mental Health and Social Gerontology. Joanna began teaching for the Gerontology Certificate program at Johns Hopkins University's Odyssey Program, achieving one of her most desired career goals — to focus more on educating others on how to work best and be most effective with the older population
