Identifying Signs of Depression and Anxiety in People Living with Dementia
The brains of people living with dementia are very vulnerable to chemical changes and psychological conditions. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has caused extreme changes in day-to-day routines, and those who are living with dementia may or may not be able to fully comprehend the reasoning behind all the changes. Individuals living with dementia are therefore at a greatly increased risk for depression and anxiety due to isolation and changes in daily routine they have been experiencing. Recognizing changes that may signal symptoms of a mood or emotional disorder is vital in providing the best possible care and responding effectively. This session will help providers recognize and respond more accurately to depression and anxiety to reduce the chances for escalation and ‘non-helpful’ hospitalizations.
