POSITION SUMMARY:

The clinical educator for nursing will be responsible for overall clinical education of Capital Caring clinical staff and external listeners in overall educational competencies, compliance, orientation and research education as applicable, and for streamlining the educational data collection and evaluation processes for Capital Caring clinical education.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Within the philosophy, objectives and policies of Capital Caring, carries out the following essential functions:

Quality Provision of Services:

  1. Utilizes knowledge of the educational process to assure that quality education based on adult principles of learning is developed and implemented.
  2. Assist with development and coordination of Nursing Programs
  3. Utilizes previous program evaluations and requirements of accrediting agencies to plan appropriate programs for all levels of nursing personnel.
  4. Supervises learners in classroom experience, as well as in their earlier clinical orientation days.
  5. Establishes appropriate and realistic goals for professional growth based upon an assessment of own strengths and weaknesses.
  6. Conducts educational programs based on both formal and informal needs assessments of target audience.
  7. Evaluates educational programs based on the analysis of the educational outcomes data.
  8. Conducts programs that incorporate adult/teaching/learning principles and current research and scientific knowledge.
  9. Utilizes a lesson plan based upon measurable behavioral objectives, teaches class in an organized manner and within the announced time limit, and utilizes appropriate instructional material to supplement the learning activity.
  10. Utilizes recognized evaluation methodologies appropriate to the learning activity, i.e. (pre and post test, objective and valid written program evaluations, and return demonstrations).
  11. Coordinates with senior nurse educator and clinical managers to facilitate nurse preceptor program for home care, inpatient unit, and other settings requested.
  12. Functions as an educational expert in the development and implementation of educational programs for specifically assigned, reoccurring programs.
  13. Has primary responsibility for the application of the educational process (i.e., assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs) to meet identified staff learning needs that occur in the areas of orientation, competencies, multi-skill worker training, and the introduction of new policies, procedures, or equipment.
  14. This position requires the knowledge and skills of professional nursing theory and practice; the principles of adult teaching/learning and the educational process; and effective interpersonal relationship skills. Knowledge and acceptance of the philosophy, objectives, mission, values, and policies of Capital Caring are essential.
  15. Participates in the development, preparation, and review of manuscripts and other scholarly projects and presentations.

Organization/Regulatory   Compliance:

  1. Maintains license requirements and meets competencies.
  2. Actively pursues personal and professional development by selectively participating in the following activities:
  3. Participates in clinical practice for purpose of maintaining clinical expertise to enhance teaching abilities.
  4. Participates in professional organizations.
  5. Conducts educational offerings in the community per request of outside groups/agencies.
  6. Remains knowledgeable of standards and activities of national and local nursing professional organizations related to Staff Development and Continuing Education.
  7. Works in accordance with public heath nursing standards, practices and policies.

Participates in the Compliance and Performance Improvement.

People/Communications:

  1. Provide leadership in the orientation process and assist with preceptor development.
  2. Consults with others in areas of educational and clinical expertise.
  3. Uses formal and informal feedback as well as practice standards, policies, Quality Improvement data, and goals to revise content of educational activities.
  4. Works with other clinical educators and specialists to plan educational programming consistent with clinical outcomes and the patient care delivery model utilizing the philosophy and objectives of Capital Caring as a framework for the purpose of Practice Improvement and Excellence.
  5. Plans educational activities with other members of CORE in order to minimize overall programming conflicts and maximize opportunities for staff and avoid redundancy.

Stewardship of Financial Resources:

  1. Creatively designs educational programs which are cost-effective and result in practice changes.
  2. Selects appropriate facilities, supplies, and equipment for educational programs.

Qualifications

LICENSURE: Licensure in the jurisdiction of practice - from the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or the State of Maryland (compact) to practice professional nursing.

EDUCATION: MSN from NLN accredited nursing program and/or MSN in process required.

EXPERIENCE: 2-3 years of Clinical Education and Research Education and analysis.1-2 years of experience developing community programs.
