Job Summary: 

This position is primarily responsible directing the overall operations of the Nursing Department in accordance with current state and federal regulations. Additional duties include overseeing scheduling of staff, budget proposal, and supervisory roles.

Job Requirements:

Registered Nurse, seven (7) to ten (10) years long-term care nursing experience with Registered Nurse license required; or equivalent combination of education and experience, MSN preferred. Incumbent should be able to analyze information received and lead staff to achieve positive outcomes for residents, possess high-quality verbal and written communication ability, strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and be knowledgeable of nursing principles and state and federal health regulations. Must be proficient in the operation of computer applications.

Key Responsibilities:

Nursing Operation

Supervises the delivery of all nursing operations and functions of Health Center on a daily basis and ensures effective and efficient resident care. 

  • Develop and maintain (1) nursing service objectives (2) standards of practice (3) policy and procedure manuals and (4) job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
  • Working with the MDS to assure that the comprehensive plan of care is maintained in conjunction with other disciplines. 
  • Performs administrative duties such as completing necessary medical forms or reviews, charts, and studies. 
  • Determines the staffing requirements necessary to meet federal, state and jurisdictional guidelines. Forecasts resident admission and needs numbers to properly estimate staffing needs to the future.
  • Delegates responsibilities, duties, or activities to designate nursing staff when appropriate. Follows up on all delegated responsibilities to ensure completion.
  • Conducts rounds of all nursing units to ensure the nursing staff is providing the highest level of care to residents.
  • Assists in reviewing and identifying all new resident medical needs. Makes recommendations on resident needs and documents in resident chart or file.
  • Assures that the Nursing department is maintained in a clean and safe manner for the highest level of resident comfort and satisfaction.
  • Coordinates activities of the nursing units with other resident care services such as physicians, physical and respiratory therapy, dietary, etc.
  • Reviews all Health Center policies and procedures on an as needed basis. 
  • Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement committee meetings to identify issues and to develop and implement appropriate performance improvement plans to correct identified problems.
  • Develop and implement policies for resident care with Medical Director.
  • Ensures staff completion of in-services/ annual education as assigned by job title. 
  • Completes reports of incidents to local, state and federal agencies when applicable. 
  • Ensure completion of investigation/interviews related to resident incidents. 

Regulation Compliance

Assures the Nursing Department complies with all state, federal and OSHA health regulations/standards on a daily basis.

  • Develops and oversees that infection control requirements are met. Addresses any issues with staff compliance with regulations as appropriate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all state and federal health regulations.
  • Conducts inspections of nursing units to determine staff compliance with all health and safety regulations.
  • Ensures documentation compliance of nursing staff.
  • Ensures licenses and certifications of all staff are current.

Supervisory Responsibility

Acts as a leader and manager of assigned positions; ensuring productivity, efficiency and accuracy in work performed. 

  • Maintains payroll and timesheets for all nursing staff; forwards to Finance at end of each week.
  • Gives written explanation of any overages in monthly variance reports to Director of Health Services.
  • Approves the monthly schedule of all nursing staff. Makes any adjustments to the employee schedule as appropriate and posts new schedule within the same day.
  • Ensures initial and on-going training is provided to employees as needed; ensures cross-training is completed as appropriate.
  • Prepares and submits annual budget for approval by the Director of Health Services.
  • Identifies unacceptable performance and behavior exhibited by employees and takes appropriate action; utilizes progressive discipline policy when appropriate and maintains documentation as required.
  • Conducts annual performance evaluations of all nursing staff in conjunction with the Director of Health Services; sends copy of evaluation to Human Resources.
  • Ensures competency for nursing staff is completed on annual basis and ensures staff perform annual competency demonstration in conjunction with annual evaluation.
  • Assures that all nursing staff follows established policies and procedures at all times.
  • Screens, interviews, and hires new nursing staff on an as needed basis.

  • Maintains resident confidentiality and privacy at all times according to policies and procedures; uses discretion when discussing confidential matters.

  • Provides assistance to residents, visitors, or employees in an emergency situation; following the proper emergency procedures.
