Administers medications to residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a  physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal  rules and regulations. Must also perform routine daily tasks, including direct care, required in  maintaining the health, comfort and well‐being of the residents. 

Essential Responsibilities: 

• Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with community policy. 

• Must demonstrate knowledge of “six rights” of medication administration. Administers and records accurately all medication given to residents as ordered by the physician. • Monitors and records vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications. 

• Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information as needed. • Observes and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse immediately. 

• Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy. 

• Completes and documents narcotic drug count with incoming or outgoing shift supervisor, reports any errors in drug count to immediate supervisor promptly. • Ensures residents weights and vital signs are completed and documented appropriately monthly and any significant changes promptly reported to the immediate supervisor. • Restocks the medication carts and medication room as needed, ensures all discontinued and expired medications are removed from the medication cart. 

• Maintains adequate supply of residents’ medications, as well as medication cart supplies including drinking cups and straws, medicine cups, pill crusher pouches, etc. • Ensures that incident reports are completed thoroughly and accurately within twenty‐ four (24) hours and that all parties are notified promptly. 

• Promptly answers and courteously respond to residents’ pages and alarms • Ensure antiseptic techniques and good hand washing practices for infection control, as well as utilizing universal precautions are in place and practiced. 

• Reports and when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.

• Ensures individual resident needs are met, assists with direct care, promptly reports  pertinent information to the immediate supervisor 

• Communicates with immediate supervisor, nursing team and other department  supervisors. 

• Supervises care staff in the absence of nurses. 

• Maintains, cleans, and organizes the Medication cart/room. 

• May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals. • May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc, including TB  and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses. 

• Maintain resident confidentiality, staff confidentiality; treat staff and residents with  kindness, dignity, and respect. 

• Comply with Resident’s Rights rules. 

• May be called upon to operate as a Certified Nursing Assistant/Resident Assistant. • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications/Skills/Educational Requirements: 

• Must hold a valid Maryland CMT license with the Assisted Living designation on their  license or a valid Virginia CMA license in good standing. 

• Must have at minimum 2 years of experience as a Medication Technician
