Are you looking to improve an older Adult's stay at the hospital?

The Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) can provide you with a unique and interactive experience.  HELP works to improve the hospital experience for older patients.  Being in the hospital can disrupt normal routines.  Coping with these changes and the stress of illness can slow patient recovery.  The volunteers contribute by decreasing the risk of delirium using the following interventions:

  • Daily Visitor– visit daily, converse and reminisce; supply assistance devices such as hearing amplifiers and magnifiers, reading glasses
  • Therapeutic activities – encourage physical exercises and mentally-stimulating activities such as card playing, jigsaw puzzles, games and reading
  • Meals – assist with eating; provide companionship during mealtimes
  • Physical activity – promote early mobilization through daily exercise and walking assistance
  • Relaxation – ease anxiety, depression, pain and insomnia; use stress relievers such as imagery, breathing techniques, music therapy and hand massage
