New study: Robocalls cost seniors $298 million in 2019 - MD and VA Top Ten

Robocalls are on the rise across the US. Nearly half the calls made from US cell phones in 2019 were spam according to a report from the Federal Communications Commission and seniors are among the hardest demographics hit.

Provision Living recently analyzed robocall complaints in every state to identify where robocalls are happening the most as well as which age demographics are hit the hardest.

Here's what they found: 

  • People 60 and older lost a total of $298 million to scams and fraud in 2019 according to the FTC.
  • The median loss for 60-69 year olds was $615 and for 70-79 year olds the loss was slightly higher at $802. Those 80 and older reported he largest losses with a median Individual losses with a median individual loss of $1,800.
