The City’s Annual Active Aging Expo is a day filled with energy, educational talks, interactive demonstrations & preventive screenings. This free event takes place on Wednesday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, 506 South Frederick Avenue, next to Gaithersburg High School.

Not-for-profit organizations with information on health & wellness as well as businesses that specialize in serving older adults will also be on hand at the Active Aging Expo.

No registration is necessary. Just show up and be prepared to change your life. While admission is free, we encourage everyone to bring nonperishable foods, diapers and other infant supplies to be donated to local families through the Gaithersburg CARES Hub. Please note that the Benjamin Gaither Center will be closed as all staff will be involved in this event.

TIME CLASS DEMOS AND ENTERTAINMENT (Main Gym) 

  • 9:30 AM Low Impact High-Intensity Interval Training and Core and Stretch - with Denise Mornini 
  • 9:50 AM Chair Yoga - with Archana Gupta. Learn poses that help to increase mobility and strength, stretch the body, reduce stress and pain, and clear the mind. 
  • 10:10 AM Formula for Fun - with Larissa Johnson. Life is full of uncertainty and unpredictability but once you have the Formula, you can become a catalyst for FUN! 
  • 10:30 AM Hula Dance - with Dawn Felson. 10:50 AM Maryland Senior Olympics - with Stacy Sigler. 
  • 11:10 AM Broadway Beats - with Becci Kimm. Learn movements as seen in Broadway productions, incorporating lyrical, jazz, tap and ballet moves. 
  • 11:30 AM Better Balance Class - with Asbury Methodist Village Well-being Professional Mary Sandoval & Professional James Warner. 
  • 11:50 AM Drums for Fitness - with Asbury Methodist Village Manager Moufti Lawani. Participants will experience the joy of drumbeats & good music for a full body workout. 
  • 12:10 PM Chair Pilates - with Ayanna Smith. Seated exercises that focus on strengthening the core while working out the whole body, promoting control, and strengthening the muscles along with creating flexibility and mobility within the body. 
  • 12:30 PM Entertainment Line Dance - with Robin Marshall. 

ARTS, CRAFTS & GAMES (Activity Room A) 

  • 9:30 - 10:00 AM Music Therapy Learn more about music therapy and how it can benefit aging adults. This workshop will include a discussion of music therapy and an interactive demonstration with participants singing and playing along; no experience required! 
  •  10:15 - 10:45 AM Bingo Join us for several games of Bingo where you will learn about Alzheimer's and Dementia while playing. Prizes to be won! Hosted by Laura Byer - Alzheimer's Association 
  • 11:00 - 11:30 AM Stretch Beaded Bracelet Participants will design and create their own stretch beaded bracelets. These bracelets can be worn as well as gifted. All materials provided. 
  • 11:45 - 12:15 PM Nutrition Enjoy a cooking demonstration featuring recipes from the sunny Mediterranean! The demo will include delicious and nutritious ingredients that can help reduce your risk for chronic disease. A tasting of the recipe will be included. 

TALKS & INFORMATION TABLES - NATURE CENTER (Activity Room C) 

  • 9:00 AM Benjamin Gaither Center Information & Seed Distribution 
  • 9:30 AM Birding in Maryland - with Gabriel Foley. Want to learn more about birding in Maryland? Join Gabriel Foley for a talk about the birds in Maryland, the best ways to find them, and how to use birding apps like Merlin and eBird. 
  • 10:30 AM Container Gardening- with Master Gardeners of Montgomery County 
  • 11:30 AM NASA Astronaut Encounter - Get the rare opportunity to meet a veteran NASA astronaut. Learn about pilots, missions and space programs. 

EDUCATIONAL LECTURES (Activity Room B) 

  • 9:30 AM Arthritis Info Session - Exercise is crucial for people with arthritis and chronic pain. It increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain, and helps combat fatigue. We will focus on learning about exercise, pain management strategies and improving mobility. 
  • 10:15 AM “We Are Made to Connect”- Overcoming Loneliness and Isolation with Asbury Methodist Village Well-being Director Belinda Degboe 
  • 11:00 AM Vertos Medical - Stop Struggling with Chronic Low Back Pain Hear from a local medical expert about lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), a common cause of low back pain, and potential treatments focusing on the mild Procedure. To learn more, visit www.mildprocedure.com.
