Maryland Department of Aging Awards $100,000 for Aging In Place Programs

Maryland Department of Aging Awards $100,000 for Aging In Place Programs

The Maryland Department of Aging is pleased to congratulate seven non-profit organizations that have been awarded grants to assist Maryland residents to age in place. A total of $100,000 was granted under Maryland Human Services Code § 10-1201 (2019).

“Older people in Maryland want to be able to enjoy the comforts of home, family, and community and, more importantly, maintain their dignity and independence,” said Maryland Department of Aging Secretary Carmel Roques. “We are pleased these grant awards will be used to serve Maryland residents by assisting them with valuable services needed to stay at home.”

The seven grantees chosen by the Department will use the funds to expand existing or establish new aging-in-place programs that provide services such as personal care for activities of daily living, health management, information on and access to community resources, affordable transportation, assistance with in-home modifications, or the opportunity to live in a Senior Village.

"To enable seniors to successfully age in place, developing a toolbox of resources, documents and information is of paramount importance,” said Christal Batey, Vice President of Programs and Services The Maryland Umbrella Group Inc., one of the grantees. “When a person’s health becomes compromised, it is imperative they continue to engage in the community as long as possible to prolong possible decline due to inactivity."

In addition to the Maryland Umbrella Group, funds from the grant were awarded to Little Falls Village, the Islamic Society of Baltimore Golden Age Village, the Village in Howard, Mary Harvin Transformation Center Community Development Corporation, Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc., and Civic Works. Under the grant agreements, each organization must match funds by 100%, with the Department
funding no more than 50% of each project’s total cost. The Department of Aging expects many older adults throughout Maryland will benefit from the grant awards and partnership with the Department. The grants will run through June 30, 2023.

The Maryland Department of Aging thanks all applicants for their interest and taking time to prepare proposals and looks forward to offering future grant opportunities across the state.
