Research Brief: Flying Solo: Experiences of Older Adults Who Are Aging Alone

A growing number of older adults who are not married, live alone, and do not have adult children whom they can rely on. Mather Institute recently publish a  research brief, Flying Solo: Experiences of Older Adults Who Are Aging Alone, reveals their plans, concerns, and needs associated with aging alone.

In this study, they explore the differences in solo and "supported" agers, age 55 and better in areas including well-being, social support, and preparations for aging—including caregiving plans. The brief details how important for solo agers to make plans for their future needs, but surprisingly, only 16% of our survey respondents have identified future caregivers.
