Let’s Talk About Your DREAM HOME and COMMUNITY FOR AGING

Kitty Russell was caregiver for her mother who moved to a senior living community. The experience got her thinking about what she wanted for herself in the future. She drafted up an idea, and AARP featured it on their website which created an interesting discussion. Join us to meet Kitty, discuss her idea and talk about all of our dreams for the future.

A Reader Sent Us Her Idea for a Dream Home and Community for Aging. You Can, Too! https://www.aarp.org/livable-communities/housing/info-2023/converting-motels-into-age-friendly-housing.html

12:15:25     From  Patricia C : I think we need to be more positive about being older. We have so much to offer as "old" people. Old is not a dirty word.

12:16:07     From  veda vazquez : especially in other counties, we are invisible

12:16:28     From  c donley   to   Hosts and panelists : lost visual--screen is black.

12:21:09     From  c donley   to   Hosts and panelists : lost visual again--screen is black.

12:21:43     From  Judith Dinitz   to   Hosts and panelists : I do not see the link to the article -thank you

12:27:51     From  Linda Meluski : This idea is basically a planned community. I know that there is one in North Carolina that I believe has medical/dental practices right within their community-it is not a 55+.

12:28:18     From  c donley   to   Hosts and panelists : still no visual.  guess it's just me?

12:37:10     From  Karen Friedman   to   Hosts and panelists : I think there are some continuing care - life care communities that are actually fabulous! I know many people that have made this choice are and very happy!

12:38:12     From  Karen Friedman   to   Hosts and panelists : Why is living in a senior community that meets the needs of older people a bad thing?

12:38:17     From  sharon sirkis : How much is your deposit to be on the waiting list? Is it refundable if you decide against it?

12:39:52     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : I spoke to many builders years ago re one level homes w garage in a neighborhood of varied ages. I spent years trying to find my dream home in Fairfax, within 5-10 miles of medical care. All the builders said they need to construct vertically due to land availability & expense. I found some alternatives in other counties further away. Eventually, I needed to sell my 3 level house & move to condo. I love my condo, but do not like the isolation of a Senior building. Condo Community is completely different from a house community. I still wish, however reality defines what’s available.

12:42:14     From  Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : AARP Livable Communities https://www.aarp.org/livable-communities/

12:43:32     From  Linda Meluski : This would be a great round table discussion with a builder who does communities that are close to cities.

12:44:21     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : Additionally, solo aging, independence, & Covid comes in to play. I upgraded my condo to ADA standards.

12:48:21     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : I’m older now & life is safer on one level.

12:50:39     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : Steve, I am very proactive, however, reality determines what’s possible at this point in time.

12:51:40     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : This is also true at hospitals. Innumerable errors & other issues.

12:53:23     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : I’m my own caregiver & move forward as best I can thru ups & down to stay alive!

12:53:38     From  sharon sirkis : Helpful tip from Joyce Meyer, Change your mind about the change!

12:53:50     From  Roslyn Schmidt   to   Hosts and panelists : “Resilient Roz”

12:54:11     From  Elva Roy : How can I contact Kitty to invite her to speak via Zoom to my Ambassadors For Aging Well group?
