Featuring

  • Colin Milner, founder and chief executive officer of the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), is one of the world's visionaries on the health and well- being of the older adult.

Questions Asked:

  • WHy aren't there demential villages in the US INSTEAD of lock down units???  They are not inmates.  They are human beings.
  • What do you mean by perceived to be “safe”?  Physical safety at the residence? Or safe in economic terms — e.g., assurance the place won’t be sold to private equity, go out of business, etc.
  • Thinking about autonomous living, i.e., dining.  Where you able to extract specifics and what people were looking for when it came to retirement living and dining desires and other activities?
  • What did the consumers have to say about the availability and quality of home care in the independent living communities (not assisted living sections)?
  • Where can we get a copy of the report?
  • what was doctors name thank you so much
  • This was excellent discussion on a very important topic. Thank you. I learned a lot.

12:28:10     From  Elva Roy : The Canadian one is in Langley, British Columbia (The Village Langley), Canada's first dementia village.

12:28:57     From  Glenna Crooks : He and I sure do agree about the websites!

12:33:29     From  Louis Tenenbaum   to   Hosts and panelists : How do these compare to eden alternative or green homes?

12:33:38     From  Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : Canada’s first publicly funded ‘dementia village’ is set to open next year. So, what is it? https://healthydebate.ca/2023/06/topic/publicly-funded-dementia-village/

12:34:48     From  Rose Joudi : Which brings us to discuss - affordability of these services and places. Our wider and regular older people are not able to access them as a result unfortunately

12:35:37     From  Elizabeth Nolte : The Dementia Village sounds like a wonderful concept but the name is terrible

12:38:25     From  Donna Spann : Staffing is a HUGE issue for senior living facilities—in dining room, housekeeping, etc. Also a constant struggle to keep up with the need for part time or full time care-givers. And that brings us back to cost…

12:39:24     From  Glenna Crooks : Can't wait to send the recording of this to my brother so we can better address some issues about our mom.

12:41:43     From  Donna Spann : The lack of main-level living in Northern VA is a major factor. We have few options for homes without stairs outside of senior living facilities such as Greenspring.

12:42:31     From  Leah Daily : Thank you!  Our perception is we have a great dining program and our residents concur, but we've had a slow roll back to our pre-pandemic dining numbers.  Good feedback.

12:46:23     From  Elva Roy : I've been advocating for my city to change its building code to require certain Universal Design Principles which don't cost the building extra $$ (a no-step entrance into the home, 32-36" wide doorways and hallways, a bathroom on the main floor.

12:47:23     From  Elva Roy : "builder" not "building" in previous comment. These requirements are sometimes called "visitability standards."

12:55:03     From  Elva Roy : Steve Gurney has an upcoming Zoom meeting about virtual companions. Looking forward to that one!

12:55:13     From  Donna Spann : Healthcare costs in the US are often prohibitive—#1 cause of bankruptcy by some metrics

12:58:58     From  Susan Tatum : I think one reason folks wait to go into communities is they fear outliving their money. This is a serious worry for many

12:59:32     From  Jessica Kraft : Artis Senior Living Offers a great concept for Dementia Communities - they have different neighborhoods with “front porches” offer freedom within the community, but it is secure in a real neighborhood feel.  They also have changing and customized enrichment programs based on the residents who are currently living there.  While bricks and mortar are similar between location, the community feel, activities and programming are all different.
