Sepsis: Know the Signs & Save Lives!

In a discussion about sepsis, Jackie Duda and Brooke DeSantis  shared their personal experiences with the condition and discussed its causes, symptoms, and prevention. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. It can be caused by a variety of infections, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and skin infections. The speakers emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment, as sepsis can lead to organ failure and death if not addressed promptly. They also highlighted the need for more awareness and education about sepsis, as many people are unaware of its symptoms and risks. The speakers also discussed the recent passing of a bill in Maryland that mandates a sepsis protocol in healthcare facilities, which they hope will be replicated nationwide.

Questions Asked

  • Does EDS/POTS predispose you to sepsis?
  • What can we do to reassert infection preventions that have started to wane below pre-COVID levels, despite COVID and other infections still being in the population?
  • What is bring done in other states? How do you suggest these measures become routine elsewhere?
  • Sepsis is also identified by simple CBC test. White count too high can result in sepsis.

12:10:08     From Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : https://www.loveforlochlin.com/

12:12:17     From renee jefferson : I've often find NPs and MDs hesitant to write orders for a UA. I work at a CCRC on the health center side.

12:12:28     From Joan Resau  to  Hosts and panelists : What is UA

12:13:56     From renee jefferson : good info

12:18:47     From zahida hasan : Zahida here, my brother had cancer and was hospitalized and had treatments etc, and had passed away there in emergency,...he also had sepsis

12:22:58     From Elizabeth Evans : Am I hearing that a UA can determine if one a candidate for Sepsis? Therefore could be used as a preventative measure?

12:23:02     From mary busse : I am a very grateful sepsis survivor!!!  Went from well to the ICU in 36 hours.  I have since met other survivors, more than I can count.  Is there an increase in cases, or am I just more aware of it.

12:24:58     From renee jefferson : I suspected my mother had a UTI, I requested a UA. My mom was living in a LTC facility. Her UA came back contaminated. I was told after I asked for the results. I requested for it to be run again. She became septic as a result from the delay. She ended up with sepsis, in the hospital, IV antibiotics. She didn't respond to the antibiotics. She came home on hospice and died.

12:27:40     From Bonnie Elliott  to  Hosts and panelists : What are they doing in the 24 hours waiting for antibiotic test results?

12:28:33     From mary busse : I did not know I am now more susceptible. Why is that?

12:35:31     From Bonnie Elliott  to  Hosts and panelists : The hospital told us that my 53 y.o. mountain biking, skiing, fit and active brother would be on dialysis for the rest of his life if he survived.

12:40:28     From Bonnie Elliott  to  Hosts and panelists : Kidneys were failing

12:41:48     From Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : At The Love for Lochlin Foundation Inc our Mission is to prevent, educate, and drive awareness to the deadly impacts of the Flu and Sepsis in Frederick County Maryland.

It is our promise that we will work tirelessly to see that no more lives are lost to the Flu or SEPSIS due to the lack of access to resources needed in our community. https://www.loveforlochlin.com/

12:42:11     From Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : Sepsis nearly killed me. This is what it was like.

Pain, fever, an emergency flight to a trauma unit. Recovering from near-death has meant taking care of my mental health, too.

By Jackie Duda https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/09/16/sepsis-septic-shock-experience-near-death/

12:45:11     From Aleta Harris : Are there  Any quality measures with the local and state governments  and or  collaboration with the Infection control departments at the hospital or  with  other organizations like NIH   NAID ( infectious disease)  division that promotes ways to  decrease  incidents of sepsis ?

12:48:00     From Elizabeth Evans : Because wearing masks is listed as preventative and Sepsis is an infection, does this mean that Sepsis is contagious?

12:51:06     From Sandra Mao : is there a good urine test kit that can be performed at home?

12:51:18     From Melissa Rae  to  Hosts and panelists : Do patients with sepsis often become tachycardic?

12:51:38     From Elizabeth Evans : Thank you so much! This has been a highly informative session!

12:53:40     From Kathleen Steed  to  Hosts and panelists : The mother of colleague, Christian John Willis, at a former job died from what I thought was sepsis.  Instead, it may have been another disease.  Is this similar to sepsis?    In looking up his website, it said, “Christian is the founder and executive director of the Peggy Lillis Foundation for C. diff Education & Advocacy (PLF), the leading national nonprofit dedicated to building a nationwide Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) awareness movement by educating the public, empowering advocates and shaping policy. Christian and his brother, Liam, founded PLF in response to the April 2010 death of their mother Margaret “Peggy” Lillis, a 56-year-old Brooklyn kindergarten teacher, from a community-acquired CDI.”

12:54:31     From Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : Tachycardia https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/tachycardia#:~:text=Tachycardia means that your heart, dangerous or even life-threatening.
