2022-05-13 12:35:20 PM Glenna Crooks : We just moved my Mom to assisted living and as we did, my brother did a full-cost analysis and what we found was that assisted living was cheaper than her remaining in her own house. It's not just about paid care in the home, but all the other costs. Her home is paid for, but when you consider food, utilities, insurance, newspaper, cable TV,  grass cutting, trash collection, etc. AL was cheaper, which really surprised us.

2022-05-13 12:36:54 PM Arvette M. Reid : Yes!  Don't start with the financial talk!  Start talking about the hopes, desires, and needs first and then see how the money works.    That is what we do with families every day.  Arvette M. Reid, Lifecare Affordability Plan, areid@seia.com, 703-940-3485

2022-05-13 12:37:06 PM Cathy Anderson : Glenna, how your mom feel about the move?

2022-05-13 12:42:07 PM Cathy Anderson : I wonder if there are any senior living facilities that specialize in dealing with residents who have a mental illness?

2022-05-13 12:42:13 PM Pam Ostrowski : It's like Tiny House Living :)

2022-05-13 12:42:50 PM Steve Gurney : Here are some senior move managers and additional resources for moving and downsizing https://www.retirementlivingsourcebook.com/search_results?sid=31&tid=15

2022-05-13 12:43:06 PM Linda : Pam, would like t o have a conversation with you about the book I wrote and my  journey with my mother from dementia to Alzheimer's which led me to my business.

2022-05-13 12:43:22 PM Glenna Crooks : Cathy, very resistant. We tried to get her in-home care last summer and she refused. Once we pressed the AL option 8-9 months later, she said she would agree to in-home care, but it was too late. If she  had accepted in-home care when we wanted to arrange that, we're convinced she would still be at home because she would not have declined so much. The combination of social isolation and lack of engaging physical exercise really caused decline. She did not want to go to AL and was very angry at us, but it's what she - and we - needed. I'm 1,000 miles away and  all of the day-to-day was falling to my brother and sister-in-law. The sales person at the AL was a miracle worker for getting her to agree to stay.

2022-05-13 12:44:23 PM Phil Philbin : Phil Philbin with JK Moving here. Send me a message or give me a call if you would like to partner with an in-home consultant. 301-943-6955 Phil.philbin@jkmoving.com jkmoving.com/philbin

2022-05-13 12:45:49 PM Glenna Crooks : Cathy, I should add that Mom has been in AL for about 8 weeks now and is doing fine. Also, she was concerned about the cost and it helped that my brother could show her in 'black and white' that it was actually saving her money, all while giving her a better quality of life.

2022-05-13 12:47:17 PM Pam Ostrowski : That's fantastic, Glenna!

2022-05-13 12:48:52 PM Pam Ostrowski : Typically, the transition takes 45 days or so.That time is also needed for the family to transition and adjust.

2022-05-13 12:53:17 PM Steve Gurney : I will be saving the chat and it will be posted at https://www.retirementlivingsourcebook.com/digital-discussions later this afternoon!

2022-05-13 12:54:19 PM Robert Pearson : DAV Service Officer, Bob Pearson, is in room 26
